The Roman Catholic archdiocese of St.John's, N.L., has called in auditors to look into financial irregularities.

Archbishop Martin Currie says Ernst and Young's annual external audit of financial statements found that money was missing from some accounts.

The church has directed that a comprehensive probe of all its accounts be conducted.

Currie has accepted the resignation of the archdiocese's business manager and the auditors have been directed to widen their investigation.

An assessment is also being made with a view to changing internal controls.

Currie says he wanted to inform parishioners as soon as possible and a message was sent out to parish councils on the weekend.
